Pro Mujer Peru: Helping Peruvian Women to Help Themselves

For more than 30 years, Peruvian Connection has supported organizations whose philosophy coincides with ours: respect for other cultures, the fostering of artisan traditions, and ecological and economical sustainability.

One of these outstanding organizations is Pro Mujer. Dedicated to providing Latin America's poorest women with the means to provide livelihood and futures for their families, Pro Mujer assists these women by giving them access to microfinance, business training and healthcare support.

A staggering 70% of Peruvian women work in precarious conditions, with low incomes and without access to social benefits. Because of this, operating a small business is often a woman's best means of supporting a family. These women are willing to invest the long hours needed to operate and grow their businesses, but without capital or training, their enterprises have very little chance of survival, let alone growth. Since 1999, Pro Mujer Peru has been helping Peruvian women to rise above the poverty line by offering them access to micro-loans, basic business training and affordable healthcare services.

Pro Mujer has launched a new strategy to reach rural Peruvian women through a loan called “Crèdito Feria,” named after the outdoor markets where rural entrepreneurs gather to sell produce and other goods. To meet these entrepreneurs need for short-term credit, Pro Mujer has cut the repayment period and is making loans to small groups of women, who disburse the loan money and collect repayments.

To further assist these rural clients, Pro Mujer opens small loan offices where clients can make deposits and withdrawalsall thanks to partnerships with local banks. Reaching these clients is no easy task. Loan officers, fluent roads on motorcycles to reach the remote “ferias”. At these markets, Pro Mujer and medical staff teach entrepreneurs through workshops on nutrition, hygiene, and dental care.

Pro Mujer Peru was recently named in Forbes' first-ever list of the Worlds Top 50 Microfinance Institutions.
“When we go to meetings, they tell us about healthcare. We learn how to take care of ourselves—what we should do. Pro Mujer has helped us all with everything. My favorite part about Pro Mujer is that they give help to those who need it most. They teach women what they need to learn about business. They teach them about healthcare. They give medical attention to the children. They treat us well. It s a great institution.”
